Cold calling connect rate: how many times should you call a prospect?

How many times should you call a prospect in cold calling? Real data from 100,000+ B2B calls: the connect rate drops after the 6th attempt.

Chart of the connect rate by number of call attempts

In cold calling, one question always comes up: how many times should you call a prospect before stopping?

Most teams still go by gut feeling or arbitrary rules: 3, 5, 10, 20 times. Sometimes far more.

Yet the data shows a simple reality: the connect rate drops with every new call attempt.

What is the connect rate in cold calling?

The connect rate is the percentage of calls a prospect picks up, whether or not a qualified conversation follows.

So it includes:

  • calls picked up and then quickly hung up
  • immediate refusals
  • very short starts of conversations

The connect rate measures the ability to reach someone, not the quality of the conversation or the conversion rate.

How the connect rate changes with the number of calls

Analysis of Minari data shows a steady decline in the connect rate as the number of attempts increases.

Connect rate by number of call attempts

On average:

  • 1st attempt: ~17%
  • 3rd attempt: ~13%
  • 5th attempt: ~10%
  • 8th attempt: ~7%
  • 15th attempt: ~5%
  • 20th attempt: <4%

The decline is gradual but steady: the more a prospect is called, the less likely they are to pick up.

How to improve your connect rate?

The connect rate doesn't depend only on the number of attempts. Several levers mechanically increase the likelihood that a prospect picks up.

  1. List quality: B2B phone numbers go out of date all the time: job changes, departures, restructurings. A list that hasn't been refreshed in 6 months mechanically contains a share of invalid numbers before the first call is even made. To fix this, tools like FullEnrich, Cognism or Pronto let you refresh your databases regularly.
  2. Call timing: The time you call directly affects your connect rate, and the best slots vary with the profile you target. According to a Minari analysis of calls made through the platform:
  • Head of Sales, VP Sales, CRO: Wednesday at 9am (20.34%) and Monday at 5pm (18.18%)
  • CFOs, finance managers: Monday between 10am and noon (up to 31.50%)
  • CIOs, CISOs: Wednesday at 9am (17.60%) and Monday morning (16.36%–16.56%)

What they have in common: Wednesday morning and Monday morning outperform for almost every profile. Friday after 4pm and Tuesday lunchtime are consistently the worst slots.

  1. Number rotation: A number used too heavily ends up flagged as spam by the carriers, which drags the connect rate down regardless of the list quality. Alternating between several numbers within the same sequence keeps the connect rate stable over time. Depending on how intensively you call, at Minari we recommend rotating across at least 3 different numbers per sequence.
  2. The volume of simultaneous calls: A parallel dialer dials several numbers at the same time and connects the rep only when a prospect picks up. Without changing the list or the script, the number of real conversations is multiplied by 3 to 4.

→ Find out how the parallel dialer works

The key threshold: when should you stop calling a prospect?

The data shows a clear breaking point: 👉 between the 6th and the 8th call attempt.

Before this threshold:

  • the connect rate is still worth working
  • each attempt still has a measurable impact

After this threshold:

  • the rate falls lastingly below 7%
  • the likelihood of a pickup becomes marginal
  • extra calls generate little value

In other words, calling more no longer really helps you reach more prospects.

Why more calls become counterproductive

Calling the same prospect too often has several negative effects:

  • wasted time for sales teams
  • a lower overall connect rate
  • damage to your numbers' reputation
  • confusing call volume with real effectiveness

High-performing cold calling relies on smart management of attempts, not on relentlessness.

What to do after 6 to 8 unanswered attempts?

Stopping calling doesn't mean giving up on the account. It means adapting the strategy.

The most effective levers after this threshold are:

  • calling other contacts within the same company
  • alternating numbers to preserve the connect rate
  • activating complementary channels (email, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, voice messages)
  • pausing the contact before a new sequence

Our approach at Minari

At Minari, the goal isn't to make more calls, but to get a clear answer (yes or no), while respecting the prospect and the deliverability of our numbers.

We use a combined top-down and bottom-up approach, structured over time.

  1. Top-down approach: target the decision-maker

For an identified decision-maker, we deliberately limit the number of attempts:

  • 6 calls maximum over a 3-week period
  • rotation across 3 different numbers
  • that's 2 calls a week, alternating numbers

This cadence maximizes the connect rate without excessive repetition or sending a negative signal to the carriers.

  1. Bottom-up approach: activate internal relays

At the same time, we reach out to other people within the same company (operational teams, managers, adjacent functions), with two goals:

  • getting a meeting with the decision-maker
  • or gathering useful information about internal challenges, tools or priorities
  1. Follow-up by email if relevant information comes up

When no meeting is booked but key information has come up, a personalized email is sent to the decision-maker (no automation).

It builds on the team's feedback and highlights a concrete problem we can solve, rather than a generic prospecting message.

  1. Pause and controlled restart

If there's no answer:

  • the call sequence is paused at the account level
  • a new attempt is scheduled 6 to 8 weeks later

This pause preserves the connect rate, avoids relentlessness and lets you approach the account with fresh context.
